Activist Destroys $500 Million In Student Debt Records

Student debt is a major problem. Many graduates find themselves paying back the debts they accrue over the course of their entire lives. But now an activist Francisco Tapia has burnt documents representing $500 million in student debt.

The Chilean activist stole and then destroyed the documents during a protest at Universidad del Mar.

Tapia, who is also known as “Papas Fritas”, said that he had “liberated” the students by setting fire to the debt papers or “pagarés”.

He further justified his actions in a video he posted on YouTube on Monday 12 May, which has had tens of thousands of views on the video sharing site.

The five-minute video above was translated by the Chilean news site Santiago Times, as saying: “You don’t have to pay another peso [of your student loan debt]. We have to lose our fear, our fear of being thought of as criminals because we’re poor. I am just like you, living a s**tty life, and I live it day by day — this is my act of love for you.”
