Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich would deport all Muslims who believe in Sharia.

Newton (Newt) Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the U.S should test every person with a Muslim background to see if they believe in Sharia law, and those who do should be deported, even if they’re American citizens. Sharia is a legal code based on the Quran and other Islamic scriptures.

In an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, Gingrich said, “Let me as blunt and direct as I can be. Western civilization is in a war.” And “Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization.” When asked by Hannity how his goal of deportation could be done, Gingrich replied, “The first step is you have to ask them questions. The second step is you have to monitor what they’re doing on the internet. The third step is, let me be very clear, you have to monitor the mosques.” He indicated that the mosques were a primary source of recruitment and indoctrination for terrorists. “We must resolve to defeat this enemy of civilization at its source,” he continued.

Gingrich also said anyone who simply visits any website “favoring ISIS or al Qaeda or other terrorist groups” should be guilty of a felony, “and they should go to jail.” He also said that calling Islam a “religion of peace” is “bologna.”

National Executive Director of the Council of American-Islamic Relations Nihad Awad, condemned Gingrich’s call to “test” Muslims in the U.S., saying, “When former House Speaker Newt Gingrich suggests American Muslims be subjected to an Inquisition-style religious test and then expelled from their homes and nation, he plays into the hands of terror recruiters and betrays the American values he purports to uphold.”
