Israeli Media Called This Palestinian a ‘Terrorist’ For Supporting ‘Contestant Three’ In ‘Arab Idol’

Mohammed AlQadi posted images on his personal Facebook page last year. But since the three Israeli teens who were recently kidnapped while hitchhiking in the illegally-occupied Palestinian West Bank, Israeli blogs and media have said that his photos are “supporting terrorism”.

To add to the irony and insult, Mohammed AlQadi is a peace activist. But he woke up Wednesday morning to find his photo listed as evidence that he is taking part in a “campaign of hate.”

The 22-year-old currently attends culinary school in France. But word quickly reached him that Israeli bloggers and media were saying he is in the West Bank, and took the picture where he is holding up three fingers, to show his support for the kidnapping of the three Israeli teens.

“I had no idea what they were talking about,” AlQadi explained to BuzzFeed via a phone interview from Lyon, France. “I went online to discover my photo being used for something I had no part in at all.”

Israeli’s Walla news agency posted AlQadi’s photo on the front page of its site. The article it linked to elicided hundreds of angry, hateful, and – we now know, misinformed – comments.

“By holding up the three sign what they are saying is that they condone terrorism, they condone kidnapping of innocent kids,” one Israeli user said. “They should be ashamed of themselves.”

But AlQadi’s posted the photo last year in support of Palestinian Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf. Assaf was identified on the show only as “contestant three.”

This may sound like a dubious excuse for AlQadi to make up after being busted supporting terrorism and kidnapping, but the problem is, he posted these images a year before these kidnappings occurred. There is no way they could have meant what the Israeli media is claiming.

“If you look at the Facebook pages of Palestinians there are dozens even hundreds of us making the three sign to support Assaf. He was our winner, he was the most popular winner of Arab Idol,” AlQadi said. “It makes me very, very, very angry that somebody took these photos and lied and said they were something else.”

AlQadi wrote to the Walla website “I know there are Palestinians who are happy when these horrible things happen to Israelis. But I don’t believe in violence. Violence only brings more violence,” said AlQadi. “It is horrifying to wake up and have your photo associated with this thing.”

Perhaps we shouldn’t assume that every Palestinian holding up three fingers is saying that they support terrorism and kidnapping… particularly when these same three fingers have been used by protesters all over the world – especially in Thailand – as a cry against martial law, in reference to the three-finger-salute popularized in the book and films of the Hunger Games.

You have a blind spot. Mr. Al Qadi is not a terrorist but a man of peace. I love him.
