MEDIA SILENCE: Santa Monica Shooter Used Guns ALREADY Banned

Put simply, i love peace. i consider myself a peace activist. i don’t hunt… i don’t even eat meat. i teach Tai Chi for that matter. i always look for non-violent solutions to confrontations, and seek to resolve conflict wherever i find it. In fact, my doctoral work itself involves reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians. Put simply, i see violence as the absolute last option, and when violence must be applied, it believe in “overcoming through yielding” – core to the Tai Chi approach to martial arts. But there is one thing i realize about the gun debate – BANS DON’T WORK.

This past week, for the first time that i can recall, gun ban advocates such as New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg have been completely silent in the aftermath of Friday’s Santa Monica College shooting. Some have speculated that this is due to the slew of White House scandals circulating right now, but this is hardly a compelling argument to me…

Santa Monica police chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said in a weekend press conference that the gunman, 23-year old John Zawahri, was carrying a weapon “similar to an AR-15“ when he opened fire at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California, leaving five people dead. If you are like me, you might know the AR-15 as the weapon reggae legend Peter Tosh had his guitar custom modeled after, or perhaps you know it as JFK’s recreational sporting rifle of choice (he loved to take it out on his yacht and plink). You might also know it from the Newtown shooting, even though the media ran with the story before discovering that the AR-15 was already illegal in Connecticut and Adam Lanza’s mother illegally owned and purchased her weapon from a black market sale. The seller was later raided as a result of this, but the media barely discussed the reason why.

But few pundits have so far used the recent Santa Monica attack as a pretext to speak out for banning the AR-15 and similar weapons. Why? What is different this time?

Well for starters, California ALREADY has some of the strictest gun control in the nation. All variations of the AR-15 rifle have been illegal for a long time now. Standard “high” capacity magazines have also been illegal in California for a long time as well. The shooter, it turns out, had also been committed to a hospital for mental problems, thus preventing him from legal purchases of any firearms, even those which are still legal in California (i.e. not the ones he used)… But none of these gun bans or control efforts kept this lunatic disarmed. i repeat: BANS DON’T WORK.

If Bloomberg, Feinstein, or Obama for that matter, were to use this shooting as a pretext to speak about the need for gun bans that California already has in place, it would really only highlight the fact that BANS DON’T WORK, but instead simply bolster the black market for firearms in the same way that it does with illegal drugs. They seem to recognize this, and thus, they have remained silent.

So the media remain relatively silent on shootings like this, to say nothing of the shotgun college shooting that occurred the week before the Boston Marathon and received virtually no coverage, as the shooter used Vice President Biden’s weapon of suggested purchase, remembering the Biden explained it was much more effective than the AR-15 for killing.

“A shotgun will keep you a lot safer than the assault weapons in somebody’s hands that doesn’t know how to use it, even one that does know how to use it,” Biden advised. “You know, it’s hard to use an assault weapon and hit something than it is a shotgun… If you want to keep people away… buy some shotgun shells.”

Neil Allen MacInnis, a student at New River Community College, took him up on this suggestion before posting on 4Chan, then heading to his school to shoot two. The media barely batted an eye. No doubt, had he used an AR-15 the story would have been sexier and “Neil Allen MacInnis” would be a household name. There’s something seriously wrong about that.

I’d love to re-share this blog but not until the use of “i” is properly capitalized. Drove me crazy otherwise I agree ban’s do not work. Could also touch on the fact that people can even manufacture their own guns 100% legally. I doubt that’s what he did but if they wanted to get around a ban. Build it in your garage with little more than drill press.

The use of “i” rather than “I” is an exercise in mindfulness of speech that i have utilized for a long time now. It’s always struck me as odd that “you” and “we” and “us”, “them” and so on, are not capitalized, but “I” is. Though we are used to it because of immersion in the English language, i find it a particularly strange facet of English ego-centrism. It got your attention, so it did it’s job i suppose 😀

You are right, as well, that guns can be manufactured for personal use legally. i’m not sure how that works in California, but the 3D gun printing also adds another dimension to the whole idea that gun banning is even possible. What we need is to dry up the black market, and the war on drugs has proven that we can’t do that by banning things.
