Televangelist Pat Robertson claims to know why loved comedian Robin Williams commited suicide. Apparently, Williams had the wrong god.
“What is your god” Robertson asks. “Is it money? So when you get money, what’s gonna happen? Is it fame? So when you get fame, what’s gonna happen? You know, you see these very popular people in the media who commit suicide, like Robin Williams recently, and ‘you say what is the deal with him’ what happened? You find people at the top of the game in music and they’re strung out on drugs, what happened, what was their god? You see, the god of the heathen are idols. And everything that you seek in life can ruin you, unless that something, or somebody, is God.”
Interesting that he never mentions anything that might sound like science. For example the oft quoted phrase “chemical imbalance” that fails to fully address the complex interactions going on inside a person that cause depression.
According to Harvard, “Research suggests that depression doesn’t spring from simply having too much or too little of certain brain chemicals. Rather, depression has many possible causes, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems. It’s believed that several of these forces interact to bring on depression.”
Harvard seems like a pretty good source and they mention things far outside the control of any human like genetics and brain regulation. By all accounts, Robin Williams was an outstanding human being. He literally had riders in his contracts that required the hiring of homeless people. Rather than disparage a great man, consider that Robin Williams death may have had nothing to do with God and everything to do with Science.
