Not long after Joan Rivers made headlines for calling the First Lady of the United States a transvestite, she then gave a tireless series of rants against the Palestinian people. One of the most notorious brought her to headlines when she said that Gazans “deserve to die” and that only those with the lowest IQs are being killed.
But now Joan Rivers is being taken to task for more, directly racist comments she has made about Gaza.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is calling on NBC to discipline Rivers and cancel her show, highlighting the fact that the so-called comedian told TMZ that Palestinians “should get nose jobs.”
Her tirade began: “They started it. We now don’t count who’s dead. You’re dead, you deserve to be dead.”
Later she claimed this was a “prayer for peace”.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said in a statement that “Rivers is a prime example of media actors either encouraging or obliging the dehumanization of the Palestinian people. Her comments, in which she also says that all Palestinians should get nose jobs, make light of and intend to degrade the humanitarian crisis of which the Palestinians are victims.”
“Because Rivers has made a number of racist jokes against different communities that have been continuously written off as ‘controversial,’ it is more important than ever for this offensive and inexcusable behavior to be addressed,” the group continued.
Rivers released a statement on Facebook, saying the question in the video caught her off guard.
“I said ‘Palestinian,’ when I meant to say ‘Hamas,'” Rivers said. Apparently, Rivers thinks that making racist jokes is okay, as long as you say “I meant to say ‘Hamas'” afterwards.
NBCUniversal, AMC and QVC did not respond to requests for comment.
