U.N. Reports 1/3 of Food is Wasted, Destroying Pro-GMO Arguments

GENERAL: Wasted Food 1

The United Nation’s food agency recently reported that at least one-third of all food in the world ends up wasted. This amounts to an annual loss of $750 billion.

Wednesday, the Rome-based Food and Agricultural Organization released a report stating that food in developing countries is largely wasted due to techniques in harvesting. By contrast, in high-income areas the main cause is wasteful consumer behavior.

“All of us – farmers and fishers; food processors and supermarkets; local and national governments; individual consumers — must make changes at every link of the human food chain to prevent food wastage from happening in the first place, and re-use or recycle it when we can’t,” José Graziano da Silva, the Director General of  Food and Agricultural Organization stated.

“We simply cannot allow one-third of all the food we produce to go to waste or be lost because of inappropriate practices, when 870 million people go hungry every day,” he continued.

This waste results in excessive carbon emissions, contributing to environmental destruction.

Furthermore, however, this report destroys the myth propagated by huge corporate GMO proponents, who would like to convince us that their methods of chemical crop rearing is the answer to hunger. When most food is wasted in harvesting alone, their argument is a moot point.
